Product Description:
The RZW02.1-160-015 is a braking resistor module built by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the RZW Braking Resistors series. In regenerative drive systems, the element receives surplus kinetic energy from the connected equipment during rapid deceleration. It converts this energy into heat, preventing DC-link overvoltage and protecting inverters and motors from electrical damage.
The resistor belongs to Line 2 of the platform and carries design code 1, linking it to a power rating of 160 kW for the associated drive. During standard duty, its thermal mass can dissipate a 36 kW continuous load, while short bursts of up to 144 kW are permitted when the control cycle is limited to 120 seconds with a mandatory 102-second idle period. These intervals produce a 15% SD operating factor that helps prevent overheating during repeated braking cycles. The aluminum bus connection accepts conductors up to 70 mm² and has a nominal resistance of 2.7 Ω, giving the drive predictable current draw during operation. Electrical safety is supported by the IP20 housing, which prevents finger contact with hazardous internal components while allowing air to circulate through the cooling fins.
The module measures 995 mm wide, 710 mm high, and 490 mm deep, providing the surface area needed to release braking heat into the surrounding air. The assembly weighs 93 kg, so suitable lifting equipment is required to position it safely during installation. A thermal time constant of 100 seconds indicates how quickly the internal temperature responds to power input. The maximum energized period is 18 seconds, which keeps internal temperatures within safe operating limits when the required idle period is observed. When multiple inverters share a braking path, the total circuit impedance must remain above 2.2 Ω to keep each module within its allowable current range. Adequate mounting clearance must be maintained around the finned housing so natural airflow can remove heat without obstruction.
