It functions as the central controller that links motion drives and process logic in multi-axis machine tools, coordinating axis interpolation, input/output supervision, and real-time diagnostics for automated manufacturing cells. The PC-side connection is through an ISA bus slot, so the module installs as a controller board within the host CNC system.

At the field layer, the module communicates with servo inverters via the SERCOS drive interface, and the motherboard carries one integrated loop that can address up to 8 embedded drives. When additional fiber rings are added, the architecture scales to a maximum of 32 drives distributed across four SERCOS loops for larger machine layouts.
