The KDA 3.2-100-3-L0D-U1 spindle drive is manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the KDA Spindle Drives series. As a servo inverter dedicated to high-speed spindles, it forms the link between a machine controller and the motor, shaping current and voltage so the cutting tool follows commanded profiles without lag. By accepting digital motion references and returning diagnostic data, the module allows CNC systems to coordinate spindle motion with feed axes during machining cycles. This arrangement helps the drive maintain stable torque delivery while protecting the spindle from thermal overload during continuous production.
The power section operates from a DC bus of 300 VDC and can deliver up to 100 A of phase current, giving headroom for aggressive spindle acceleration. Speed setpoints are transferred through a SERCOS interface, while fine contour corrections arrive on the separate digital position command value channel, reducing quantization error during finishing passes. The separated command paths support accurate speed regulation and fine path correction without mixing the two signals. The integral heat sink blower is energized from an auxiliary 115 V, 50/60 Hz source so the main drive supply remains undisturbed. This model does not provide a second encoder input for applications that use dual-loop feedback.
A mounted heat sink blower combined with forced cooling keeps component temperatures stable inside the cabinet. Cabinet airflow must remain unobstructed so heat can be removed effectively during extended spindle operation. The drive maintains rated performance when the ambient air is held between 5 to 45 °C, and no derating is required up to an altitude of 1000 m above sea level. These limits apply to the Series 3, Version 2 design revision. Above those conditions, excess heat or reduced air density can limit continuous current capability and trigger drive self-protection routines.
