The KDA 3.1-150-3-APS-U1 spindle drive is produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the KDA Spindle Drives series. As a dedicated spindle controller, it converts DC-link energy from an upstream power module into a regulated three-phase output for high-speed machine-tool spindles, enabling precise speed regulation and torque control in milling, drilling, and grinding centers on automated production lines. This type of control lets the spindle respond smoothly to commanded speed changes during cutting, drilling, and finishing operations. Speed reference is accepted as an analog voltage, so the numerical control can command spindle velocity through a standard ±10 V signal without additional fieldbus hardware.
The unit is powered from a DC bus of 300 VDC, and its power section can deliver 150 A of continuous armature current to the connected motor. A separate heat sink blower draws its supply from 115 V/50-60 Hz, supporting the drive’s thermal management while it operates with forced cooling. This keeps semiconductor temperatures stable when cabinet airflow alone is insufficient and helps the power section remain within its intended operating range during sustained spindle demand. The drive is part of design series 3, placing it within the 3.x KDA platform used in multi-axis racks.
Site conditions permit ambient temperatures between 5 to 45 °C and installation heights up to 1000 m above sea level without derating, covering typical shop-floor environments. For supervisory communication, a serial interface (RS-232-C) is provided for direct parameter access from a host PC or diagnostic terminal, while a second encoder input accepts spindle or auxiliary motor feedback for high-resolution position loops. Cooling air is moved across the fin pack by a mounted heat sink blower, which eliminates external ducting and leaves more room for adjacent cabinet components.
