The KDA 3.1-050-3-DPS-U1 is a spindle drive module produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the KDA Spindle Drives series. Designed to regulate high-speed machining spindles, the unit translates digital speed demands from a CNC controller into controlled three-phase motor power while managing dynamic braking and protective diagnostics. By integrating power conversion, control electronics, and a forced-air heat sink, the drive supports spindle axes that require rapid acceleration, repeatable speed bands, and stable thermal behavior in industrial automation cells. This arrangement allows the spindle motor to respond quickly to changing speed commands during cutting, tapping, and other machine-tool sequences where speed consistency affects process quality.
A DC bus of 300 VDC feeds the output stage, and the inverter can deliver a continuous phase current of 50 A to the connected spindle motor. The internal heat sink blower is powered from an auxiliary line of 115 V/50–60 Hz, isolating cooling demand from the main bus and keeping airflow available whenever the control section requires it. This KDA version uses forced cooling to maintain semiconductor junction temperatures under rated load. Speed reference is accepted as a 16-bit parallel digital word, allowing fine command resolution from numerical controls without analog drift or conversion latency and helping the spindle follow commanded speed changes more precisely.
A mounted heat sink blower expels waste heat directly at the rear panel, which helps prevent heat buildup around the power section. Communication to supervisory equipment is available through an RS-232C serial interface for parameter access and diagnostic queries, and a second encoder input supports spindle-synchronous feedback or additional motor feedback channels. Continuous operation is specified for environments between 5 and 45 °C. Correct performance is maintained up to 1000 m above sea level without derating, allowing use in standard indoor industrial locations that stay within the stated temperature range.
