The KDA 3.1-050-3-D0I-W1 is a spindle drive produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the KDA Spindle Drives series. It installs between the machine control and a high-speed spindle motor, converting a regulated DC bus into variable three-phase power that follows programmed setpoints. In machining centers, the unit supports closed-loop speed regulation, torque limiting, and fault monitoring so the spindle can respond accurately during drilling, milling, grinding, and orientation tasks. Its role is especially important during rapid acceleration and deceleration, where stable control helps maintain commanded speed and surface quality while the machine moves through changing load conditions.

The power stage is supplied by 300 VDC from a shared source module, which provides the intermediate circuit for inverter operation. The drive has a rated current of 50 A, so connected conductors and protection devices must support continuous load without overheating. A separate fan supply of 220 V/50–60 Hz powers the cooling circuit, and the housing uses forced cooling to move heat away from the power components during sustained spindle operation. Velocity commands are transferred through a digital 16-bit parallel input, giving the controller fine command resolution and consistent speed reference handling across the operating range.

Cooling hardware is provided as a mounted heatsink blower, which directs airflow across the heat-producing surfaces without the need for external ducting. The unit also includes an incremental encoder output that can pass position-related signals to other control functions when synchronized spindle motion or orientation is required. Permissible ambient temperature ranges from 5 to 45 °C, and installation altitude must remain below 1000 m above sea level so air density stays high enough for effective heat removal. When operated within those limits, the drive can maintain stable thermal behavior during long machining cycles and repeated changes in spindle speed.
