The KDA 2.1-150-3-LPI-W1 spindle drive is manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the KDA Spindle Drives series. In an automation cell, it forms the closed-loop power interface that receives high-level velocity commands from a motion controller and translates them into precisely timed three-phase currents for a machine-tool spindle. Its design targets applications where rapid speed changes, constant surface finish, and coordinated multi-axis machining are required. This control approach supports stable spindle behavior during contouring, drilling, and other machining routines that demand repeatable rotational accuracy.
The drive draws power from a regulated DC bus rated at 300 VDC and can deliver a continuous phase current of 150 A to the motor windings. Internal thermal energy is removed by a mounted heat sink blower that uses forced cooling to keep component temperatures stable during prolonged high-duty cycles. This blower is supplied by an auxiliary line of 220 V at 50/60 Hz, so cooling air remains independent of the DC link. Speed reference data enter the control electronics over the SERCOS interface, allowing synchronized motion with other axes on the same fiber-optic ring. The control card also accepts a second encoder channel for spindle or auxiliary motor feedback, enabling position-indexed cutting and phase-locked tapping when required by the machine program.
