It forms part of a closed-loop axis group in CNC machining centers, supplying regulated armature current to a main spindle motor while accepting digital velocity commands from the motion controller. Its role is to keep cutting speed stable during drilling, milling, or grinding so that surface finish and tool life meet process requirements. In this role, the drive regulates motor response to load changes that occur as cutting forces vary through the machining cycle. This makes it suitable for machine tools that require stable spindle behavior during changing feed rates and material engagement.
The power stage is energized from a regulated DC bus of 300 VDC and can deliver up to 100 A of continuous armature current to the spindle windings. A dedicated rear-mounted heat sink blower runs from an auxiliary supply of 220 V at 50/60 Hz, and this arrangement is described as a mounted heat sink blower. Air moves across the aluminum fins through forced cooling to keep semiconductor temperatures within operating limits during sustained high-speed cutting. Rear-panel blower placement directs airflow over the heat sink instead of relying only on cabinet air circulation. For motion feedback, the unit provides a second encoder input that can be wired either to a spindle position encoder or to an auxiliary motor encoder when the axis is used in a tandem configuration.
The drive operates at ambient temperatures from 5 to 45 degrees Celsius without derating and can be installed up to 1000 m above sea level. For diagnostics and feed-forward tasks, the drive offers an incremental encoder output that mirrors spindle position to downstream measuring equipment. The mirrored signal can also be used by external devices that need position data separate from the main control loop. Speed reference data reach the control electronics through the SERCOS interface, enabling deterministic updates on the shared fiber-optic ring. This communication path supports accurate speed changes and coordinated spindle positioning during machine operation.
