The unit regulates power to single-axis servo or induction motors, executing speed, torque, and position commands issued by the plant controller. Within an automation cell, it serves as the axis-level regulator, translating command data into modulated output voltage for the connected machine element.

It accepts a three-phase supply of 3 x AC 200...500 V ±10%, allowing connection to common industrial mains without an external transformer. During dynamic acceleration, the device can deliver up to 8 A of peak current to the motor windings, so short overloads are accommodated without tripping. Thermal energy is removed by internal air cooling, using an integrated blower to keep the electronics inside the housing below permitted limits. Motion commands and status data are exchanged over a SERCOS III master communication channel that also supports cross-communication between drives in a multi-axis configuration.
