Product Description:

The DMA 045A 4101-D is a three-phase servo drive module built by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the DMA Servo Drive Modules series. It is intended to slot into an RMA/DM 45 backplane and convert the shared DC link into controlled stator currents for synchronous and asynchronous motors used in industrial automation. By integrating positioning logic for one axis, the module provides closed-loop velocity and position control without an external motion card. This arrangement allows the module to handle axis control directly within the rack.

The internal control electronics draw a standby current of 1.32 A from the 24 V utility bus, which keeps logic and relay functions active during startup. At a carrier frequency of 4 kHz, the inverter stage can supply a continuous phase current of 23 Arms, while the available continuous current drops to 15 Arms when the switching frequency is increased to 8 kHz. For short acceleration periods, the same 4 kHz setting permits a peak output of 51 Arms. Energy is sourced from the non-regulated DC link, which is maintained at 715 VDC by the common supply unit. Command data reach the DSP through a 16-bit analog interface, allowing proportional torque or speed references from legacy controllers.

Switching frequency and power loss determine the module’s thermal behavior during operation. When the carrier is set to 8 kHz, the drive can deliver up to 44 Arms for several seconds, after which the output current is reduced according to heat sink temperature. During regenerative events, the DC bus is held near 670 VDC by an active chopper to stabilize torque, and the inverter itself dissipates approximately 220 W under maximum continuous load. Two rear-mounted fans force air through the 50 mm wide aluminum channel, and the 7.3 kg assembly remains supported by the backplane guide rails. This forced airflow helps remove heat from the narrow module body during sustained operation.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The DMA 045A 4101-D is a 3-phase servo drive module for synchronous and asynchronous motors with an analog 16-bit interface. Air-cooled backplane construction and one-axis positioning support make the design especially appealing for precise motion applications. Continuous output of 23 Arms at 4 kHz stands out as a strong performance point.’’
