In a motion-control rack, it acts as the communication gateway between the drive processor and higher-level PLCs, translating position or velocity commands into fiber-optic telegrams that reach Indramat motors and feedback modules without electrical noise.

The controller leaves the factory set to a data throughput of 2 Mbit/s, a rate that maintains deterministic timing for most indexing and point-to-point axes. At that default speed, the optical transmitter launches power of -4.5 dBm, enough to drive short plastic links or longer glass fibers without saturation at the receiver. Media choice is flexible because the duplex channel accepts plastic or glass conductors, allowing the link to suit short cabinet runs or longer routed distances. Two independent lightwave interfaces are provided; the count of 2 ports allows one link for command traffic while the second can be reserved for diagnostic data or expansion. When cycle times must be reduced, the hardware can be reparameterized for a peak line rate of 4 Mbit/s, cutting telegram duration in half while maintaining frame integrity.

At the upper performance setting, the source can emit up to 0 dBm, giving extra headroom for long glass runs, while safe operation on shorter loops is ensured because the driver also respects a minimum launch of -7 dBm. Incoming telegrams are accepted on receive port X21, and outgoing frames leave through transmit port X20; this fixed port assignment simplifies cabinet wiring and helps prevent polarity errors during installation. With Interface Option 02, the unit supports deterministic handshake signals so that velocity loops remain stable even when several axes share the fiber segment.
