It coordinates axis positioning, I/O supervision, and safety exchange with higher-level PLCs. In automated cells the unit hosts firmware that computes torque and velocity setpoints and transmits them to compatible power sections, allowing synchronized multi-axis motion on packaging, printing, and material-handling machines.

The controller exchanges real-time data with drives over the SERCOS II fiber-optic ring, and its communication loop can be shortened to a minimum network update of 1000 µs when application timing demands it. Internally, the current regulation task refreshes every 125 µs, supporting tight speed and torque loops even on high-dynamics axes. Two independent encoder ports designated 2 x EN1 accept resolver or HSF feedback, so the unit can read absolute position while simultaneously monitoring secondary feedback for redundancy. A resolver excitation generator operating at 4 kHz drives the connected position sensors, so feedback lines remain immune to low-frequency noise that can appear in large machines. These hardware provisions allow the application programmer to apply safe torque-off, over-speed, and guard-door logic inside the drive without additional relays.
