In a multi-axis IndraDrive system, it processes command sequences, manages digital and analog interfaces, and forwards position feedback to the drive control functions, enabling deterministic motion control in packaging, handling, and forming equipment. Its hardware concentrates communication ports, encoder services, and machine-level control functions into a single slot to simplify electrical cabinet layouts and reduce external wiring. This arrangement helps the drive coordinate machine signals and motion commands without requiring separate interface modules for basic control tasks. Because it is installed as a plug-in module, the card keeps communication and feedback connections inside the compatible drive platform.

The primary field bus on the card is a Parallel Interface, which lets the drive exchange process data with a PLC in one controller cycle. A built-in RS232 service port supports parameter transfer from a service computer. For machine-side signaling, the MD1 I/O section provides 12 x 24 V digital inputs that accept switching voltage once the line rises above 15 V and switch off when it falls below 5 V. Eight complementary outputs are rated at 8 x 24 V, and each channel can source up to 0.5 A, so solenoid valves or indicator lamps can be driven directly without interposing relays. Encoder emulation mirrors position data to external counters, and overload as well as short-circuit protection disconnects a channel when the permissible load is exceeded.

The output stages are grouped in pairs, and the combined load per group must stay below 1 A; an internal relay rated for 24 V DC at 1 A can switch auxiliary circuits. Fast probing of edge positions is supported with a capture pulse width of 200 µs, which helps the controller register trigger events during high-speed motion. Integrated encoder power delivers 11.6 V DC at up to 300 mA, making it suitable for typical TTL or HTL feedback devices. That onboard supply reduces the need for separate encoder power wiring in compact cabinets. The module does not implement dedicated safety technology, so external safety relays must be used when that function is required.
