The unit coordinates axis commands, field signals, and encoder feedback so that drives receive deterministic position and velocity references. Within an automation cell it acts as the logic core that converts higher-level PLC messages into real-time setpoints for servo amplifiers, simplifying multi-axis synchronization and machine sequencing.

The controller communicates with drives over a Parallel Interface, eliminating network latency for time-critical cyclic data. Internal demand on the cabinet power supply is modest at 21.5 W, which eases thermal planning when several controllers share the same enclosure. Local machine signals are handled by 16 DI / 16 DO that reside on the MD2 piggyback; the inputs and outputs are arranged as 2 input groups and 4 output groups so wiring can be isolated by machine zone.
