The unit serves as the central command module in drive systems, executing axis coordination, monitoring, and device-level safety functions for industrial automation cells. Its hardware platform combines real-time processing with modular I/O so it can coordinate servo drives, feedback devices, and machine safety elements from a single mounting slot in a Rexroth drive rack.

Primary motion data enters the module through a Parallel Interface, allowing simultaneous 16-bit word transfers that reduce cycle times in time-critical positioning tasks. For setup or event logging, an auxiliary RS232 channel provides direct access to controller parameters from a notebook or HMI terminal. Axis feedback is accepted on Encoder 1 through EnDat 2.1, supporting absolute position transmission with 1 Vpp or 5 V TTL signal levels, and its sensor power is maintained by a dedicated 5 V regulator on the board. A second feedback port supports Resolver/HSF signals so legacy motors with analog transducers can operate beside modern digital encoders without additional interface cards. The integrated MD1 expansion provides 12 Digital 24 V Inputs for limit switches or probe triggers and 8 Digital 24 V Outputs for relay coils, pilot lamps, or drive-ready interlocks. System-level risk reduction is handled by the Safety Technology I/O option. Its solid-state driver lines can source up to 24 V / 0.5 A for safe torque-off contactors, while higher loads are routed through the onboard relay rated at DC 24 V / 1 A. A D-Sub 9 female connector groups the safety terminals so field wiring can be completed without special tooling.
