Mounted in a control cabinet, the device receives high-level program instructions from a PLC and translates them into cyclic setpoints for connected amplifiers. This separation of sequencing and motion logic supports stable operation and helps maintain deterministic control when electrical interference is present.
Data exchange is carried out through SERCOS, a real-time serial interface specified in IEC 61491 / EN 61491. The transmission medium is optical fiber, which eliminates galvanic loops between the controller and drives. When glass fiber cables with a 3.0 mm core are used, the optical link can span up to 500 m without repeaters, making it suitable for large production cells. Connection integrity is supported by the FSMA (IEC 874-2) plug format, whose threaded coupling resists vibration and keeps the fiber ends aligned. Each telegram is transmitted as light pulses, so electromagnetic fields from welders or inverters do not disrupt signal timing.
In a typical installation, the controller is placed at the head of a Ring network, allowing drive nodes to forward telegrams and provide an alternate path if a single fiber segment is interrupted. For compact machines, plastic fiber with a 2.2 mm core can be routed over bends up to 50 m in total length while retaining the same telegram structure. Where floor runs are exposed to traffic, a jacketed glass line with a 6.0 mm reinforced fiber provides added mechanical protection without changing the optical behavior of the link. This arrangement supports flexible routing in enclosed machines and along longer cabinet-to-axis runs.
