The IP6002-B520 is a serial communication extension from Beckhoff within the IP Compact Box Units series. The unit acts as a remote I/O module that adds an isolated RS-232 interface to EtherCAT field installations, allowing controllers to exchange low-speed serial data with legacy sensors, barcode readers, or operator terminals directly on the machine. Its sealed housing supports decentralized automation and helps minimize the cabling distance between connected equipment and the host PLC.
This compact box exposes one logical serial port, allowing one external device to be connected at a time. Communication occurs through the RS-232 physical layer, which adheres to the CCITT V.28 and DIN 66 259-1 electrical limits. The data stream defaults to 9600 baud with eight data bits, no parity, and one stop bit. Duplex transfer is supported without hardware handshaking. The interface provides 500 V of galvanic isolation to protect the upstream bus from ground loops. EtherCAT cyclic frames carry one control and status byte along with five user-data bytes representing the state of the serial port. The enclosure meets IP65, IP66, and IP67 protection requirements, enabling operation on moving tooling, conveyors, and washdown lines where exposure to dust or water may occur.
Field wiring is handled through a 5-pin M12 socket, which places the power pair and two data conductors in a keyed connector designed to withstand vibration. When the port is active, the module accepts character strings up to 128 bytes long before forwarding them to EtherCAT. Outgoing messages are buffered at 16 bytes to maintain deterministic scan times. The permissible cable length for this interface is 15 m; longer runs may not maintain the required RS-232 signal margin. The mounting orientation is unrestricted, allowing installation on panels, bracket arms, or machine rails. TxD and RxD are the only signal lines presented, keeping the transmit and receive paths separate at the connector face.
