Beckhoff’s IP6002-B310-0000 is a module in the IP Compact Box Units series that links a single serial device to a higher-level fieldbus network within automated plants. The sealed housing attaches directly to the machine frame, allowing instrumentation such as barcode readers or weigh scales to communicate with the controller without extra cabinets. By relocating the port to the field, wiring runs are shortened, panel space inside the control enclosure is saved, and the serial connection can be placed closer to the instrument it serves.

Communication to the controller occurs over the PROFIBUS system, and the module converts serial traffic from its RS-232 port into cyclic bus telegrams. The serial side follows the CCITT V.28 / DIN 66259-1 standard and operates at a fixed 9600 baud with a frame format of 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit. This fixed format suits simple peripheral devices that send consistent character streams. One channel is present, and it terminates in a 5-pin M12 socket, so only a single external device can be addressed. Electrical isolation of 500 V separates the field electronics from the bus to limit ground loops. Incoming characters are buffered in a 128-byte receive FIFO, allowing bursts from the attached instrument to be stored until the next cycle. The link works in full-duplex mode, and a maximum serial cable distance of 15 m is supported between the module and the connected unit.

Each bus message that leaves the unit contains a control status field of 1 byte and up to 5 bytes of user data, which suits short command and response exchanges. Outgoing characters are staged in a 16-byte transmit queue to prevent underruns during data transfer. Signal integrity is supported by a maximum bit distortion of < 3%, and the enclosure has an IP65/IP66/IP67 sealing level for installation on conveyors, packaging lines, or other washdown areas.
