The IP5209-B318-1000 is a compact PROFIBUS encoder interface module produced by Beckhoff within the IP Compact Box Units series. Designed as a decentralized counter block, the unit captures incremental SinCos feedback directly on the machine without requiring a control cabinet. It connects inline with field devices through molded connectors and forwards position or velocity information to the controller, reducing analog noise and cabling length in industrial automation environments. Its purpose is to deliver reliable position data for coordinated axes in packaging, textile, or robotic cells.

Its signal-processing path supports an input scan rate of 500 kHz, enabling it to capture edge changes from fast rotary or linear encoders without loss. Internally, each period is subdivided into 1024 discernible steps, and the interpolated output is stored with 10-bit resolution before being transferred as a 32-bit measured value to the bus master. For noise suppression, the counter accepts frequencies only up to a limit frequency of 100 kHz, so higher-order harmonics are rejected while the fundamental signal is retained.

The module supplies the transducer with 5 VDC at up to 0.5 A maximum, eliminating the need for a separate power rail near the sensor head. Process data are exchanged over PROFIBUS with a tee connector, and a single counter channel simplifies mapping because only one position variable is generated. Sealed housings rated IP65/IP66/IP67 protect the electronics, while threaded M8 plugs provide the 24 V system feed and an M8 socket passes power downstream. The encoder cordset terminates in an M23 12-pin screw connection, and the SinCos interface accepts 1 Vss sinusoidal signals. Because the installation position is variable, the box can be rotated to align cable exits, allowing flexible mounting on gantries or conveyor frames.
