Product Description:
The IP5009-B318 is a compact field I/O module manufactured by Beckhoff in the IP Compact Box Units series. It is intended for decentralized installation near an SSI position sensor so that process data can be placed directly on a PROFIBUS network without routing long encoder cables back to the control cabinet. Within an automation cell, the module serves one measurement channel and provides a direct link between the sensor and the controller while keeping wiring to a minimum in moving or space-constrained assemblies.
The unit uses PROFIBUS with an integrated tee, so it can be inserted in-line without additional junction hardware, and the channel operates in a read-only data direction. The default transfer speed for the serial stream is 250 kHz, but the electronics permit bursts up to 1 MHz when higher-resolution timing is required. A side-B downstream feed is presented on a M8 Socket, 4-Pin connector so adjacent modules can be daisy-chained. Inside the device, the SSI engine samples a serial word length of 24 bits and maps the result into a cyclic process image of 32 input bits on the fieldbus. Because the product is not programmable, the telegram format remains fixed, and the SSI interface uses a differential clock-data pair for noise-resistant communication over a short sensor lead.
Power enters through an M8, 4-pin connector, and the sensor side is wired on an M23 screw-in, 12-pin circular connection that also forwards a stabilized supply of 24 VDC to the transducer. For applications that need command flags, an optional control byte with 8 output bits can be appended, and status feedback is available through an optional byte with 8 input bits. Communication across the fieldbus and the local SSI link is transmitted as a differential signal (RS-485), which helps minimize electromagnetic interference and supports cable runs that are common on industrial machinery.
