The IP3312-B520 is a compact remote I/O module from Beckhoff in the IP Compact Box Units series. Designed for thermocouple sensing, it converts temperature signals into digital words that a controller can process. Mounted directly on machinery, the unit handles temperature acquisition tasks in distributed automation networks and relays the data through its integrated fieldbus interface. By combining measurement electronics and durable connectors in an IP-rated enclosure, it reduces cabinet wiring and shortens the distance between sensors and control logic.
Internally, the module offers 4 independent analog input channels that accept type K thermocouples by default. Each reading is digitized within a fixed 260 ms conversion cycle, allowing periodic updates without placing unnecessary load on the bus. A galvanic barrier rated at 500 V separates the sensor side from the control circuitry, which helps reduce the risk of common-ground faults. Temperature data are transferred over DeviceNet, and the controller receives a process image of four 16-bit words, one for each channel. The resolution is 0.1°C per digit, and users can select from four input filter versions to improve noise rejection for the process. Millivolt measurement is also possible, which expands the range of supported low-level signals, while sensors draw power directly from the load-voltage US rail.
The measurement chain is factory calibrated to a total accuracy of <±0.5% FS, and the detachable cold-junction module ZS2000-3712 continuously tracks connector temperature to support that accuracy. Power is supplied through a compact 4-pin M8 connector, while each thermocouple pair terminates on a threaded M12 screw-in connector that withstands vibration and supports secure installation on the line. The thermocouple wiring uses a two-wire arrangement, so installation does not require separate compensation leads. The compact housing also allows placement close to heaters, ovens, or chillers where ambient temperatures can fluctuate.
