The IP3102-B510 is an analog input module built by Beckhoff and supplied within the IP Compact Box Units series. As a sealed field device, it digitizes sensor voltages and streams them directly into an EtherCAT process image, allowing control systems to capture low-level signals near the machine without a cabinet. In industrial automation its purpose is to convert differential field measurements into stable numerical values that drives and PLCs can act upon.
The module offers 4 analog inputs, each wired in a differential configuration so that the measured signal is referenced to its companion conductor instead of ground. Electrical separation between the input group and the logic domain is rated at 500 V, limiting fault propagation when adjacent circuits reach high potential. The front end resists loading because its impedance is >100 kΩ, preserving signal fidelity when connected to high-impedance transducers. Common-mode tolerance up to 35 V max prevents clipping when both lines float above ground. After acquisition, values are quantized to 15 bits + sign, giving 1 part in 32,768 resolution, which suits slow-changing process variables such as pressure or temperature.
The accuracy budget is tight; linearity and gain drift together produce an error band of <±0.3% FS, so calibration can remain infrequent during normal service. Conversion speed is adjustable: the fastest cycle completes in 5 ms when rapid feedback is critical, while a programmable filter can extend integration to the factory default of 250 ms for improved noise suppression. Up to ten filter variants can be selected through the TwinCAT configuration tool without touching hardware. The internal sensor supply may provide up to 30 VDC, allowing most two-wire transmitters to be powered through the same M12 screw-in signal connector. All data are transferred as four 16-bit words that appear automatically in the controller’s process image via the downstream M8 link.
