The IP2321-B518-0000 is an IP Compact Box Unit produced by Beckhoff for decentralized I/O installation in industrial automation. As a member of the IP Compact Box Units series, it locates digital sensors and actuators directly on a machine while preserving cabinet space. The module collects and switches field signals close to the process and forwards data to the higher-level controller through its integrated communication interface. This decentralized arrangement reduces the amount of sensor and actuator wiring routed back to the main control cabinet.
The unit exchanges cyclic data over CANopen with an integrated tee connector, so bus cabling can branch without external accessories. Its signal mix consists of 4 inputs and 4 outputs, which appear to the controller as a 4-bit input and 4-bit output process image. Each input passes through a debounce stage that holds signals for 3.0 ms to filter contact chatter. While active, the outputs draw only 30 mA per channel, reducing power loss in the supply wiring. Individual drivers can source up to 2.0 A per channel, and the short-circuit-proof electronic circuitry limits fault current to 4.0 A before automatically restoring operation after the fault clears. The control and fieldbus domains are galvanically isolated, while reverse-polarity protection on the supply helps prevent damage from incorrectly wired connectors.
An M8 screw-in thread provides the mechanical connection to mounting plates, and separate 4-pin M8 plugs handle sensor power and load voltage to keep installation compact. The housing has an ingress protection rating of IP65/IP66/IP67, allowing use in washdown areas or outdoor locations without additional sealing. The outputs operate from a rated load voltage of 24 VDC, and an internal distribution rail supplies up to 0.5 A per channel to connected sensors. The four output drivers have a combined current limit of 4 A, permitting simultaneous operation of multiple loads within that limit. Separate connections for sensor power and load voltage help organize field wiring and isolate the power paths used by the attached devices.
