The IP2042-B318-0000 is an eight-channel digital output box manufactured by Beckhoff in the IP Compact Box Units series. It converts logic-level commands from a PLC into switched 24-volt lines that energize solenoids, beacons, or relays located directly on the machine frame. The molded housing, combined with field-grade connectors, allows decentralized mounting so control cabinets can be smaller and wiring runs shorter in industrial automation systems. Integration into a PROFIBUS network means the module appears as a standard slave device in the controller’s process image, simplifying configuration.
The module operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC, delivering power to the transistor stages as well as to connected loads. Communication is handled through PROFIBUS, so cyclic output data are transmitted over the shielded two-wire bus with timing determined by the master. For quick in-line installation, Beckhoff molds an integrated tee connector into the housing, allowing the PROFIBUS cable to branch without external accessories. Each channel is routed to a rugged M12 screw-in socket, permitting preassembled sensor cables to be locked in place and sealed against vibration. The module can switch up to 2.0 A per channel, allowing direct actuation of medium-power solenoids without interposing relays.
Power is injected through two 4-pin M8 feeders, and three internal load circuits allow the unit to deliver a combined 12 A to field devices while keeping group fusing straightforward. The logic electronics draw only 50 mA per channel, so most of the available supply is reserved for load switching. For auxiliary sensors that share the same distribution block, a stabilized supply of 0.5 A per channel is available on the output pins. If an accidental short circuit develops, the driver stage limits the current to 4.0 A, preventing circuit-trace damage until the upstream protection opens. Reverse-polarity protection is integrated into the circuitry. Because there is no downstream connection, bus termination remains consistent at the final node.
