The IP2021-B318 is a digital output module produced by Beckhoff for its IP Compact Box Units series. It mounts directly on machinery and provides field-level switching of 24-volt loads, linking sensors and actuators to the higher-level bus while keeping wiring short. In distributed automation, modules like this reduce control cabinet density and provide protected channels that can drive valves, solenoids, or indicator lamps.

Each of the module’s 8 channels is rated at 2.0 A per channel, and the outputs share a common 24 VDC supply. When a channel is active, it draws only 30 mA per channel from the control side, so line drivers on the bus remain lightly loaded. The process image presented to the controller occupies 8 bits, enabling direct bitwise access without additional mapping. Control-to-fieldbus isolation helps prevent ground loops between the logic and power domains, and reverse polarity protection keeps the electronics safe if the supply is wired incorrectly. The load circuit supports ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads, letting one module handle mixed actuation tasks. A downstream M8 socket carries switched power to additional devices, while the screw-in M8 output connectors provide vibration-resistant terminations.

Total current across all channels may not exceed 4 A, and an integrated electronic fuse trips at a short-circuit level of 4.0 A to limit fault energy. For sensor back-feeding, the unit sources up to 0.5 A per channel, so proximity switches and encoders can share the same connector with the actuator. Environmental sealing meets IP65, IP66, IP67, allowing variable installation positions on robotic arms or conveyor frames without additional enclosures. Power is fed through a 4-pin M8 connector, and the internal architecture keeps supply and signal grounds separate to maintain the specified isolation. Because installation orientation is unrestricted, wiring can follow the machine layout more easily.
