The IP1011-B318 is an industrial I/O module produced by Beckhoff for the IP Compact Box Units series. It is intended to sit outside the control cabinet, close to the machine, where it gathers on-machine sensor states and forwards them to the central controller over a single fieldbus cable. By shifting acquisition of binary signals to the point of origin, the unit reduces cable lengths, lowers electromagnetic interference, and simplifies installation in decentralized automation architectures.
Communication is established through PROFIBUS, and the housing includes an integrated tee connector that lets the bus trunk continue without external junction blocks. The eight input channels are powered from a 24 VDC sensor supply that is derived from the control voltage rail; each draws just 6 mA, so a typical proximity switch can be driven without overloading the upstream power rail. Before an edge is entered into the controller’s cyclic data, a hardware filter of 0.2 ms removes chatter. Once qualified, each state is copied into an 8-bit input process image, giving the PLC direct bit-level access with a constant offset regardless of the scan sequence. This deterministic mapping simplifies ladder logic and minimizes reaction time when the machine depends on quick detection of actuators, guard interlocks, or part-present flags.
