The IP1002-B518 is a distributed I/O module produced by Beckhoff within the IP Compact Box Units series. Intended for decentralized installation, the device captures on-machine sensor states and transfers them to a central PLC through the CANopen fieldbus. It serves industrial automation tasks that require compact, sealed input nodes near actuators and sensors. The sealed housing permits mounting outside control cabinets, and relocating the input circuitry to the field shortens wiring runs between sensors and the controller. This arrangement is useful on conveyors, handling stations, and compact machine sections where cabinet space is limited and field devices are spread across the machine frame.
Each of the 8 digital inputs follows the EN 61131-2 Type 2 specification and is energized from a 24 VDC nominal supply. When a sensor switches, only 6 mA of current is drawn, which helps limit loading on the upstream sensor source. A built-in 3.0 ms filter suppresses contact bounce so transient edges are less likely to appear in the controller image during switching events. The IP65/IP66/IP67 protection rating shields the electronics from dust and water exposure, allowing the module to be mounted directly on machinery in dirty or washdown-prone areas. Inputs are connected through an M12 screw-in plug and are galvanically isolated from the fieldbus, which helps reduce ground-loop interference between the control level and field wiring. The process image carries eight bits of input data, and the sensor supply can provide up to 0.5 A per channel. The unit is not programmable, which helps keep operation consistent in fixed I/O tasks.
