By embedding both power and communication in a sealed enclosure, the unit permits mounting directly on machinery where cabinet space is limited, shortening signal paths within material-handling, packaging, and assembly systems. This arrangement also reduces the need for long cable runs back to a central cabinet and helps keep local machine wiring more organized.

I/O capacity and network timing are fixed because the unit is not programmable. It provides 4 digital inputs for switches or proximity sensors and 4 digital outputs for solenoids or indicator lamps, letting the controller exchange eight discrete bits per cycle. Network communication is handled through the Lightbus fieldbus, while the internal coupler backplane uses an optical fiber IP-link medium that transfers data at a 2 MBit/s IP-link rate between adjoining extension modules. The distributed chain can be extended in 15-meter increments, with each hop limited to 15 m module spacing, and up to 120 extension boxes may be inserted before the master node.
