Product Description:
The IE6022 extension box unit is manufactured by Beckhoff and belongs to the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a serial interface node that lets EtherCAT systems incorporate external RS-422 or RS-485 devices without adding a dedicated bus coupler. Within industrial automation cells, it forwards process data between field sensors or actuators and the controller, allowing modular expansion of machine functionality. Separate buffers handle 16 transmitted and 128 received bytes so polling jitter does not affect downstream devices.
This module offers a single serial channel configured for RS-422 or RS-485 communication. The line impedance is matched to 120 Ω, reducing signal reflections over long cable runs. With a default transfer speed of 9600 baud, the internal UART supports additional programmable rates while maintaining the asynchronous 8N1 frame structure. Physical wiring is accomplished through a front-mounted 5-pin M12 socket, and mode selection sets the transceiver for Full Duplex operation when RS-422 is required. Control and status occupy one byte, and five further bytes are reserved for process data, giving the EtherCAT master fixed-length telegrams.
For use on distributed machines, the extension box permits cable lengths up to 500 m when standard twisted pairs with the specified impedance are installed. An opto-isolation barrier rated at 500 V keeps the field side electrically separated from the control electronics, preventing ground offset currents. The die-cast housing carries a combined IP65/IP66/IP67 rating, so the assembly tolerates dust ingress and high-pressure water during washdowns. A selectable RS-485 mode runs in Half Duplex, allowing multiple nodes to share one pair without collisions, while the differential signaling method further improves noise immunity in electrically noisy plant environments.
