The IE5109-0000 is an incremental encoder interface from Beckhoff in the IE Extension Box Units series. Designed as a counter and latch module for industrial automation, it captures edge-driven position data from field encoders and forwards time-stamped values to the control system. The device forms part of a modular I/O topology mounted close to sensors and actuators, reducing cabinet wiring while supplying a dedicated measurement channel for motion tasks on packaging lines, robotics axes, or test rigs.

It provides one measurement channel built around a 16-bit binary counter that can evaluate A/B/Z signals at up to 1 MHz when 4-fold evaluation is enabled. Timing precision is obtained through an interval resolution of 200 ns, so velocity or period calculations remain consistent even at high spindle speeds. The incoming encoder leads terminate at a M23 screw-in, 12-pin socket, while a separate M12 screw connector is used for the gate or latch input. In the process image, the module exposes 2 × 16-bit data, 1 × 8-bit control/status, allowing the PLC to read position values and write operating modes in a single cyclic exchange. Rising-edge triggering, a 16-bit zero-pulse latch, a high = stop gate action, and an adjustable limit frequency complete the capture feature set.

The encoder is powered by a dedicated 5 VDC sensor supply that is limited to 0.5 A total, so most incremental encoders can be fed directly from the box without extra power rails. Front sealing and the molded housing provide an ingress protection rating of IP65/IP66/IP67, allowing the device to operate in washdown or dusty conveying zones. If the connected sensor asserts an Encoder fault signal, the status input forwards that condition to the controller for rapid fault reporting. A variable installation position allows the module to fit into horizontal or vertical runs without altering performance.
