MPN: IE5009-0000
The Beckhoff IE5009 is part of the IE Extension Box Units series and features a single channel SSI sensor interface. It supports a maximum data rate of 1 MHz and differential RS485 signal type, with an encoder connection using a 12-pin M23 screw-in. The unit operates with a 24 VDC sensor supply and downstream connection through a 4-pin M8 socket.
Internal Product Review
The IE5009 is a Beckhoff IE Extension Box Unit with an SSI sensor interface and differential RS485 signal handling. A 24-bit serial input and 32 input bits of process data support accurate acquisition in encoder feedback applications. Fast response and dependable integration make this module especially appealing where 1 MHz data rates are required.

Product Description:
The IE5009 is an extension box unit produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. The device terminates one SSI encoder in the field and streams its position data back to an upstream controller, reducing cabinet wiring and simplifying installation in distributed automation cells. By converting the sensor signals into standardized process data, the module establishes reliable position feedback for motion axes, material-handling stations, and other equipment that relies on absolute position information.
It communicates with the controller through an SSI sensor interface, and the differential pair uses a differential RS485 signal, which provides immunity against electrical noise. With just 1 channel, the IE5009 dedicates the full bandwidth to a single feedback device. The serial clock can operate up to 1 MHz, supporting high-resolution encoders, and the module supplies 24 VDC to power the transducer directly. Because the data flow is read-only, the encoder transmits its bit stream to the box, which then forwards it through the downstream line. That downstream link uses one 4-pin M8 socket, providing a compact, keyed connector for daisy-chained field wiring.
At power-up, the transfer speed defaults to a preset value of 250 kHz, permitting slower sensors to synchronize before higher rates are commanded. During each bus cycle, the IE5009 delivers 32 input bits to the PLC, while an 8-bit output control byte allows the host to reset, latch, or preset the encoder. The physical connection to the sensor uses an M23 screw-in, 12-pin plug that secures the shield and differential lines against vibration. Upstream power continues through a single 4-pin M8 feed connector so additional units can be supplied without extra distribution blocks. The telegram length is fixed at 24 serial bits, and an 8-bit status byte reports data validity, parity, and synchronization status to support diagnostics.
