The IE4112 is an output extension box produced by Beckhoff for the IE Extension Box Units series. It adds distributed outputs to EtherCAT installations, providing actuator control close to the machine without requiring long cable runs to a control cabinet. The device translates controller commands into signals for valves, contactors, lamps, and other connected loads. Its compact metal housing allows direct installation on conveyors or tooling, while a fieldbus connection and a power connection simplify expansion along the machine. This decentralized arrangement can reduce cable routing through crowded enclosures and place the output interface closer to the equipment it controls.
The unit provides four output channels and uses an M12 screw-in socket, allowing preassembled cables to remain securely connected under vibration. Its process-data width is 4 × 16 bits, which the controller exchanges cyclically over the fieldbus. Output values have a 15-bit resolution, permitting fine current adjustments when pulse-width modulation is used. Command updates are completed in less than 4 ms, supporting machinery that requires fast and predictable actuator responses. The circuitry is intended for loads below 500 Ω and receives actuator power from the Load Voltage (UP) rail. Downstream equipment connects through one 4-pin M8 socket, while upstream power passes through one 4-pin M8 connector to support daisy-chained installation. The digital ground has a common reference with 24 VDC, eliminating the need for separate reference conductors. The unit supports a variable mounting orientation, so the housing can be installed horizontally, vertically, or inverted without affecting its thermal behavior. These connection options allow power and output wiring to follow the physical arrangement of nearby machine components. The metal enclosure also provides a durable mounting surface for installations exposed to routine industrial vibration and movement.
