Product Description:

The IE3112 is an analog input extension box produced by Beckhoff for the IE Extension Box Units series. It adds remote measurement capacity to EtherCAT or other fieldbus networks by translating sensor currents into the controller’s process image. Designed for cabinet-free installation, the device gathers signals from two-wire or three-wire transducers in distributed machinery and forwards the digitized data to higher-level automation systems.

This module provides 4 differential current channels that accept a nominal range of 0–20 mA. Each channel is converted with a resolution of 15 bits plus sign, providing fine measurement detail for setpoint or feedback tasks. A complete scan of all channels is finished in 140 ms, so slowly varying process variables such as pressure or tank level can be captured accurately. The input impedance is fixed at 80 Ω; this low burden prevents a noticeable voltage drop in 20 mA loops. To protect upstream devices, the analog front end is separated from the logic side by 500 V of electrical isolation. The individual inputs are not isolated from one another, which simplifies internal signal routing.

The signal chain can be conditioned by selecting among 10 digital filter coefficients that attenuate noise in electrically harsh environments. Measurement integrity is maintained with a maximum error of ±0.3% FS, and external sensors may be powered through a dedicated supply rail rated at 30 VDC. The common-mode voltage must remain below 35 V, and isolation between the control and fieldbus sections helps prevent ground loops. The process image provides four 16-bit words, while additional diagnostics are available through four 8-bit and four 16-bit optional I/O registers. Wiring is performed through M12 screw-in sockets for the analog inputs and two M8 connectors for the power feed. One M8 connector is male and receives incoming power, while the female connector supports a daisy-chain connection to another device.
