The IE2808 is an extension box unit produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. It functions as a compact digital output module that distributes 24 V control power to field devices while keeping wiring decentralized and panel space free for other components. In an automation line, the unit mounts close to sensors or actuators and passes its signals upstream through an IP-Link fieldbus, allowing the main controller to update output states without long parallel cable runs.
The electrical section is designed around a 24 VDC supply, and each of the sixteen channels draws only 5 mA per channel for its internal logic, reducing current demand on the field power rail. Actuator lines can switch up to 0.5 A per channel, and the integrated electronic current limiter keeps the cumulative draw below 4 A across the module. Outputs have individual short-circuit protection that disconnects only the affected channel and leaves the others active. A short-circuit current of 1.5 A is tolerated long enough for the protection to activate, and the circuitry automatically resumes operation when the fault is cleared. Power enters through an M8 male socket, and actuation lines exit through a 25-pin D-Sub connector so that multicore cables can be terminated quickly.
Diagnostic feedback is provided through a 16-bit status word, while command data arrive in a matching 16-bit process image, giving the controller bit-level visibility of every output.
