Beckhoff’s IE2512-0000 is an I/O extension box in the IE Extension Box Units series. It provides two configurable output channels that sit directly on the machine frame and are addressed over EtherCAT. By generating variable-duty signals, the unit drives solenoids, small motors, or indicator loads without routing every conductor back to the control cabinet, streamlining decentralized industrial automation. It is well suited to distributed machine layouts where output wiring needs to remain close to the actuators being controlled.

The module energizes field devices at a rated supply of 24 VDC, and each channel can deliver up to 2.5 A, so loads such as proportional valves remain within thermal limits. Internally, the PWM carrier runs at a default base frequency of 250 Hz; this value balances electromagnetic compatibility with audible noise. Because every output is pulse-width modulated, duty-cycle resolution reaches 10 bits, allowing 1,024 discrete power levels for fine process control. The controller maps two 16-bit words of process data to these outputs, while separate 8-bit control bytes adjust behavior such as fail-safe states. Short-circuit monitoring is active, and a freewheeling diode across the driver stage suppresses inductive kick when coils are de-energized.

Fast switching is supported; the channels accept a minimum on time of > 750 ns and a minimum off time of > 500 ns, preventing pulse truncation when very narrow commands are issued. Downstream loads are cabled through a compact 1 x M8 female socket, 4-pin, while upstream power enters through an M8 male feed connector; both connectors lock with a quarter turn to maintain IP protection. Control and diagnostic lines use the shielded, vibration-resistant M12 screw-type signal interface. This connector layout helps keep field power and signal handling organized during continuous switching duty.
