Product Description:
The IE2310 is a compact digital I/O extension box produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. The device functions as a decentralized interface that collects field signals and drives loads directly on equipment surfaces. This arrangement shortens sensor and actuator cabling, decreases electrical noise, and allows controllers to distribute processing over a fieldbus network in industrial automation environments.
The module provides four digital inputs and four transistor outputs, which appear in the controller process image as four input bits and four output bits. Each input meets the EN 61131-2 Type 2 requirements, draws only 6 mA from a connected proximity switch, and passes through a 0.2 ms hardware filter that suppresses contact bounce. The outputs switch the plant supply at 24 VDC and can deliver up to 0.5 A per channel for valves, relays, or LEDs. Nominal load current consumption remains at 20 mA on each channel, allowing total power requirements to be calculated when several boxes are connected. The combined input and output arrangement supports local signal acquisition and load control without requiring separate interface modules near the equipment.
Power enters the housing through a single M8 4-pin feed connector, while a single M8 4-pin downstream connector forwards power to the next I/O node. These coded plugs are compatible with the 8 mm snap-on wiring system, enabling tool-free installation in any orientation permitted by the machine layout. The internal design provides isolation between the fieldbus and control circuits, preventing high-side switching transients from propagating to the control layer. If a fault occurs, an electronic limiter restricts the short-circuit current to 1.5 A. The sensor supply remains available during normal channel operation, while the electronic protection helps prevent excessive fault current from affecting connected equipment. Variable mounting positions and a compact form factor allow the unit to fit in confined areas within conveyors, gantries, and other automated machinery.
