The IE2302-0000 is an eight-channel remote I/O extension box manufactured by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. As a sealed field module, it links sensors and actuators to EtherCAT couplers over short M8 cables and supplies 24-volt switching signals directly at the machine. The unit expands digital I/O capacity without requiring additional cabinet hardware, keeping connections close to the process and reducing wiring length. Its compact field-mounted design is suitable for distributed automation systems in which sensor and actuator connections must be installed near operating equipment.
Each of the four digital inputs draws 6 mA at a rated logic level of 24 VDC, and input signals are debounced by a 3.0 ms filter that suppresses contact chatter. The four matching high-side outputs can source up to 0.5 A per channel, while the internal electronics consume up to 20 mA per channel under continuous operation. Channel-to-channel isolation and separation between the channels and control circuitry are absent, so all eight I/O points share a common reference. The channel arrangement provides 4 inputs and 4 outputs, allowing straightforward bit addressing within the PLC. This configuration supports direct connection of common industrial sensors and low-current actuators without separate remote terminal assemblies.
The housing uses an M12 screw-in power and sensor interface, while fieldbus traffic and auxiliary 24-volt power pass through a single four-pin M8 feed-through connector. A four-pin M8 socket provides a downstream daisy-chain connection for the next extension box. The process image contributed to the controller consists of 4 input bits and 4 output bits, aligning with the physical channel arrangement and simplifying diagnostics. If an output is short-circuited, electronic protection limits the current to 1.5 A and disables the driver until the fault clears. The control and fieldbus circuits are galvanically isolated from the power supply, while the sensor supply lines can deliver 0.5 A per channel to external devices. The unit supports installation in any orientation, allowing its mounting position to suit the available machine space and cable routing.
