Product Description:
The IE2301 is a compact extension box from Beckhoff that belongs to the IE Extension Box Units series. Acting as a decentralized digital I/O node, it brings eight channels directly to the machine frame so controllers can collect sensor states and switch actuators without a control cabinet. By housing its electronics in a sealed enclosure, the device extends EtherCAT fieldbus installations into areas where space, wiring length, and exposure make traditional terminal blocks impractical.
The module provides four inputs and four outputs, a layout that keeps address mapping straightforward while supporting mixed-signal tasks on conveyors or indexing tables. All ports use an M8 screw-in connector, allowing quick disconnection while maintaining vibration resistance. Each input draws only 6 mA, so light-duty proximity switches can be powered directly. An internal filter of 3.0 ms suppresses contact bounce before data reaches the controller. The output drivers deliver up to 0.5 A per channel, providing sufficient current for small pneumatic valves or indicator lamps. The process image mirrors the hardware by presenting four input bits and four output bits to the PLC for deterministic control cycles.
A rated load voltage of 24 VDC aligns the box with standard control power buses, and the enclosure meets IP65/IP66/IP67 protection requirements, allowing the unit to tolerate washdown, dust, and occasional immersion. Downstream devices that draw constant current benefit from the four-pin power daisy chain, which uses one M8 power connector and one M8 power socket. The internal electronics consume just 20 mA per channel. Protective features include reverse-polarity detection, galvanic fieldbus isolation, and a short-circuit cutoff at 1.5 A to prevent circuit damage during a fault. The installation position is variable, and the supported loads may be resistive, inductive, or lamp loads. This flexibility allows the box to be mounted where wiring runs are shortest. A dedicated sensor supply rated at 0.5 A per channel supports proximity devices.
