The IE2022 extension box is a digital output module manufactured by Beckhoff for the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a remote I/O node that places protected 24 V switching capability directly on a machine frame, minimizing control-cabinet wiring. In an industrial automation system, it routes PLC commands to field actuators and supports compact installation in harsh areas with its sealed metal housing. The unit interfaces with EtherCAT or other backplane couplers through a single cordset and acts solely on output bits.
Operation is based on a nominal supply of 24 VDC, aligning with the standard control power found in most machinery. The module provides 8 digital sourcing outputs presented to the controller as an 8-bit process image, so every channel can be addressed individually. Each channel can deliver up to 2.0 A, allowing direct switching of solenoid valves, signal lamps, or small motors, while the box may draw a maximum of 4 A through its supply line. The electronics support resistive, inductive, or lamp loads and remain functional after fault events because the outputs are short-circuit-proof.
