Product Description:
The IE2021 belongs to the IE Extension Box Units series manufactured by Beckhoff. It is an eight-channel digital output module intended for decentralized I/O installation in automated machinery. By connecting to an EtherCAT coupler or another fieldbus master, the unit switches loads near sensors and actuators, reducing cabinet wiring and communication latency in industrial automation cells. Its decentralized design allows output devices to be connected near their operating locations rather than routed individually to a central control cabinet.
The module operates with a nominal supply of 24 VDC, and each of its eight discrete channels can sink or source up to 2.0 A. The channels provide a maximum combined group rating of 4 A. Internal electronics draw only 30 mA per channel, so bus current remains low even when all outputs are active. The available outputs can drive valves, contactors, or signaling devices without additional expansion hardware. Supported load categories include resistive, inductive, and lamp loads, while built-in transient suppression protects the outputs from inductive voltage spikes. Reverse-polarity protection guards against incorrect supply wiring. The short-circuit-proof output stages shut down an affected channel while allowing the remaining channels to continue operating. Each channel appears in the controller’s process image as a digital output bit, enabling straightforward PLC programming through standard function blocks.
Connection to the next device in the I/O strand is provided through one 4-pin M8 downstream socket, while supply power is bridged through one 4-pin M8 feed-through connector. Output states are transferred across the bus as one compact byte because the process image contains exactly 8 output bits. Fieldbus isolation provides additional protection for channel integrity, and each point offers sensor back-feed of 0.5 A for proximity switches or encoders. A guaranteed short-circuit cutoff at 4.0 A prevents sustained overcurrent from damaging the output circuitry. All signal wiring uses an M8 screw-in interface that resists loosening from vibration in mobile or high-cycle installations. The separate downstream and power connections also support orderly cable routing along decentralized machine sections.
