The IE1502-0000 is a counter extension box from Beckhoff belonging to the IE Extension Box Units series. Intended for machine-mounted IP67 environments, it adds two high-speed incremental counter channels to an EtherCAT network and supplies one protected output per channel for on-site actuation. By moving these functions out of the control cabinet, the module cuts wiring length and improves update times in packaging, conveying, and assembly stations.

Each of the two counters operates with a 32-bit depth, so rollover does not occur during long production runs. The module exposes two counter inputs, two gate inputs, and two up/down inputs, giving separate signal paths for pulse, enable, and direction lines. A switching frequency of 100 kHz allows reliable registration of fast encoder edges. For every count channel there is one output, permitting immediate feedback to pneumatic valves or indicator LEDs. These outputs are rated for a maximum current of 0.5 A and the drive circuitry is short-circuit proof, preventing shutdowns caused by wiring faults. All electronics are supplied from the field power via a nominal 24 VDC feed delivered through the upstream M8 connector, while data are forwarded to the next device through a 1 x M8, 4-pin downstream port.

The process image presented to the controller is 64-bit out/in + 8-bit ctrl/status, so high-resolution position values and diagnostic flags travel in one telegram. Sensors connected at the I/O face can draw up to 0.5 A in total from the internal supply. Signals arrive through an M12 screw-in header that resists vibration, and the compact housing may be fixed in any orientation, noted as Variable installation position. An additional 1 x M8 4-pin socket handles power feed-through to neighboring boxes, reducing trunk cabling.
