The IE1502 is a compact extension box unit produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a decentralized counter and digital I/O block, allowing incremental encoder signals and fast switching devices to be wired directly on a machine frame while communicating their states to the higher-level controller. By placing counting, gating, and limited power output close to the machine, the box reduces cabinet wiring and supports modular automation layouts. This arrangement is useful where distributed I/O is preferred over long signal runs back to the control enclosure.
Designed for standard machine control voltages, the module accepts a nominal supply of 24 VDC. Two counter channels operate with a depth of 32 bits, enabling long operating cycles before rollover. Each counter input tolerates edge rates up to 100 kHz, so pulse trains from fine-pitch encoders are captured without loss. The integrated power stage can source up to 0.5 A on its switched outputs, and that stage is short-circuit proof to help prevent damage in fault conditions. Dedicated gate inputs let the controller enable or inhibit counting, while up/down changeovers provide direction recognition for bidirectional motion signals.
The data interface exchanges 64 bits of process information in each direction, giving the PLC direct access to counter values, gate states, and output commands in a single bus cycle. Field termination is made through rugged M12 screw-in connectors, which are well suited for direct machine mounting in harsh environments. Electrical separation between the I/O circuitry and the network is provided through control/fieldbus isolation, which helps reduce interference paths between signal levels. Directional switching is handled by two up/down channels that accept commands at up to 2 kHz, supporting precise bidirectional positioning in indexing tables and conveyor axes.
