Product Description:
The IE1012 extension box is produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. This compact I/O node gathers discrete sensor states in machine cells and relays them to a higher-level controller through an upstream fieldbus. With eight digital channels and integrated sensor power distribution, the unit brings 24-volt signals from proximity switches or light curtains into the automation system without requiring a full cabinet-mounted terminal block. Its compact housing supports distributed installation near field devices, reducing the amount of individual sensor wiring routed back to the main control cabinet.
The module handles digital input signals, so each channel reads logic levels instead of supplying power to an actuator. A nominal input voltage of 24 VDC provides compatibility with the control voltage commonly used in industrial automation systems. Each input draws approximately 6 mA, which is low enough for most two-wire sensors. Signal transients are suppressed by an input filter with a response time of 0.2 ms, reducing contact bounce while preserving adequate response speed for standard PLC scans. Cabling to subsequent modules is completed through one 4-pin M8 socket, which supports daisy-chained power and communication. The opposite face carries an M12 threaded connector for sensor leads. Internal routing keeps the channels electrically connected to one another and to the control circuit, while the control and fieldbus conductors remain galvanically isolated.
The unit provides eight input points, and its process image occupies 8 input bits in the controller’s memory map. This arrangement allows the control program to read and process each channel as an individual Boolean state. The box supplies connected sensors with up to 0.5 A per channel, providing sufficient current for compatible field devices. The sensor supply includes short-circuit protection, so an accidental fault on one connection does not collapse the shared 24-volt rail. Power reaches the housing through a separate M8 connector that also passes the control voltage to downstream devices. This connection arrangement maintains a single-cable topology along the machine frame and reduces the need for separate local power distribution terminals.
