The IE1000-0000 is an IP field I/O extension box manufactured by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. This compact module provides eight digital input channels for decentralized sensor data collection in industrial automation systems. By relocating input points directly onto machines, the unit reduces wiring back to the control cabinet and allows EtherCAT masters to read process states with minimal latency. It is designed for installation outside protective enclosures so production equipment can be monitored in washdown or dust-laden areas.
The electronics operate from a nominal control supply of 24 VDC, and each active input draws only 6 mA, conserving PLC power capacity when many sensors are connected. A built-in debounce stage provides a filtering period of 3.0 ms, preventing false transitions caused by contact bounce. The device offers 8 discrete input channels, allowing proximity switches or limit sensors to be aggregated in one location. For downstream sensors, the integrated supply delivers up to 0.5 A per channel, eliminating the need for separate power distribution blocks. Isolation is not provided between the channels and control circuitry. However, the control and fieldbus circuits are isolated to help protect the network from wiring faults on the machine side.
Field wiring terminates at one 4-pin M8 socket that carries the collected input data to additional EtherCAT nodes, while control voltage enters through one 4-pin M8 connector for straightforward daisy-chain power connections. The housing has an IP65/IP66/IP67 rating, allowing direct mounting in areas exposed to cleaning processes, dust, oil spray, or temporary water immersion. Within the controller process image, the unit occupies an 8-bit input slot, which simplifies PLC addressing and conserves data space. The sensor supply is derived internally from the control voltage, so a separate external power distribution connection is not required for each attached sensor. Its compact enclosure supports installation close to sensing points, which shortens individual sensor cable runs and reduces the amount of field wiring routed through the machine. The daisy-chain connections also allow power and communication paths to continue to compatible field devices without requiring separate home-run cables for every module.
