The FM3312-B310-1010 is a thermocouple interface manufactured by Beckhoff in the FM Thermocouplers series. Mounted alongside controllers, the unit gathers low-level signals from process sensors and converts them into numerical data that automation software can read. This conversion allows continuous temperature supervision, alarm generation, and feedback control within furnaces, reactors, or packaging lines. Its design supports direct installation inside machinery where vibration or washdown conditions exist. Because it can be installed close to the sensing points, the module helps shorten analog signal paths and limits exposure to electrical interference before conversion occurs.

The module provides 12 input channels so a single device can accommodate an entire sensor cluster without additional cards. Each channel accepts a type J thermocouple and digitizes the signal with 0.1 °C/digit resolution, making small thermal variations visible to the controller. Data is transmitted over PROFIBUS DP, and the internal processor sustains a network throughput up to 12 Mbaud, matching high-speed line requirements. A stabilized 24 V DC power rail feeds the analog front end and communication circuitry, while internal cold-junction compensation corrects ambient reference drift. This arrangement lets one node gather readings from several heating zones and pass them to the PLC over a single fieldbus connection.

For plant locations exposed to dust or spray, the housing carries an IP65 rating, allowing the electronics to be mounted directly on the machine frame rather than in a sealed cabinet. Thermoelectric inputs are isolated from the power domain by 500 Vrms, preventing ground loops when long sensor leads are routed alongside motors. The aluminum enclosure measures 150 × 52 × 129 mm, so it fits in narrow trenches beside conveyor rails and other machine structures with limited clearance. Installation uses a DIN 45322 six-pin bus connector, and the Han 24 E block accepts 2-wire thermocouple leads up to 10 m long. A separate 100 Vrms barrier protects the fieldbus interface, while the 4 × 16-bit process image maps temperature words predictably in the PLC scan.
