The EPP5101-0002 is an incremental encoder interface module produced by Beckhoff within the EPP EtherCAT P Box Modules series. Designed for decentralized installations, the unit captures differential encoder signals from field devices. It then forwards position data onto the control network, allowing motion controllers to supervise speed and displacement in conveyors, gantries, and pick-and-place axes on the factory floor. Its field-mounted layout places encoder acquisition close to the machine, which can shorten signal runs and reduce exposure to electrical noise.

The module operates from a nominal 24 VDC supply that is delivered through the EtherCAT P lines, so no separate power tap is needed. Communication and power share the same hybrid bus, identified in this unit as EtherCAT P. Upstream and downstream connections are provided on two M8, 4-pin, P-coded sockets, while the incremental encoder leads enter through an M12 signal port. Inside the housing, a differential input circuit accepts one incremental channel with A, /A, B, /B signals through an electrical interface compliant with RS422. The counting ASIC can register edge changes at up to 1,000,000 incr./s, enabling reliable feedback at high operating speeds. To energize the sensing device, the module delivers 5 VDC at the encoder supply pins, and the single-channel layout suits encoders that use one track pair plus an optional index pulse.

The enclosure carries a protection rating of IP67, which helps block dust ingress and water jets during washdown cycles. The shared EtherCAT P conductors can source up to 3 A, allowing the device to back-feed low-power sensors without external wiring. Correct connector retention is secured by applying a mating torque of 0.6 Nm to the M12 sensor plug and 0.4 Nm to each M8 bus socket. These torque values help reduce vibration-induced loosening when the module is mounted on moving machinery.
