The EPP2338-0001 is an EtherCAT P I/O box module produced by Beckhoff in the EPP EtherCAT P Box Modules series. It combines sensor and actuator supply with high-speed EtherCAT communication in a single rugged housing, enabling decentralized installation directly on machines. The unit serves as a compact interface that transfers digital signals between field-mounted devices and the central controller, removing the need for separate power rails and reducing cabinet wiring.

The module provides 8 parametrizable digital channels that can each be configured as an input or output. Field power and EtherCAT P are daisy-chained through 2 x 4-pin M8 sockets, while the individual signals exit on another row of eight M8 sockets. Despite the high channel density, the enclosure measures only 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, which eases installation on narrow structural members. Incoming signals pass through a 10 µs filter, so bounce from mechanical contacts is suppressed before reaching the controller. When a channel operates as an output, it can source 0.5 A, and the electronics draw just 6 mA from the input path. The aggregate load is limited to 3.0 A.

EtherCAT P line segments feeding the module can extend to 30 m between modules, which allows flexible spacing of I/O islands along a machine. Overcurrent events are limited internally, and the logic disconnects a channel once it reaches 1.5 A, preventing damage to sensors or wiring. The control electronics are powered from the UP supply, which operates at 24 VDC and draws 20 mA, while the separate US load supply draws 100 mA. That UP rail is also forwarded to the sensor supply so transducers receive regulated 24 V without additional cabling. Even with molded connectors and conformal-coated electronics, the box weighs only 165 g, reducing strain on cable chains and allowing direct mounting on pneumatic grippers or mobile carriages.
