Product Description:

The EPP1258-0002 is an EtherCAT P digital input module produced by Beckhoff and supplied in the EPP EtherCAT P Box Modules series. It acts as a field-level interface that connects discrete sensors to an EtherCAT network while delivering sensor power through the same hybrid cabling. By integrating I/O acquisition, power distribution, and protocol communication in a sealed housing, the device simplifies decentralized machine wiring and supports deterministic automation tasks on production equipment.

For network connectivity, the module provides two M8, four-pin, P-coded red sockets that carry EtherCAT data together with the Up and Us supply lines. Four sensor groups are connected through four M12 sockets, and each group provides two channels for a total of 8 digital inputs. The input stage complies with EN 61131-2 Type 3 and draws only 6 mA per channel at 24 VDC, limiting the load placed on connected sensors. A hardware debounce time of 10 µs filters contact chatter before the signal reaches the EtherCAT controller, ensuring reliable edge detection during fast sequencing.

The module supports distributed timestamping, and two dedicated channels can record signal edges with an accuracy of 10 ns plus input delay and a fine internal resolution of 1 ns. Each timestamp input draws 3 mA at 24 VDC, enabling precise event capture without excessive sensor loading. Synchronization with EtherCAT distributed clocks ensures that recorded times align with sub-microsecond machine cycles. Power is provided on the Up line at 24 VDC with a maximum permissible load of 3 A. The Us control electronics draw 100 mA from a separate 24 VDC rail and can supply connected sensors with up to an additional 3 A. These power capabilities allow the module to feed proximity switches and light barriers directly while maintaining consistent timing performance.
