The EL9012 terminal belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series from Beckhoff and operates as a passive interface element in distributed I/O stations. Its role is to bridge the incoming system voltage and the EtherCAT communication channel so segmented DIN rail assemblies keep continuous power and data flow without additional electronics. By placing this coupler at planned points, long terminal chains can be divided into manageable mechanical sections while uninterrupted bus timing is maintained in industrial automation cells. This makes the terminal useful in modular I/O layouts where power continuity and stable communication must pass cleanly from one terminal section to the next.

The housing spans only 5 mm, allowing many units to sit side by side without consuming much rack width. It locks onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail, which provides the physical support for the terminal lineup. Field wiring lands on the right-hand side, maintaining a consistent plug orientation across adjacent modules. Internally, two conductors forward power and E-bus signals, carrying the 24 V supply and the E-bus connection to the next device. Touch-safe shielding meets enclosure class IP20, so live contacts remain protected from accidental finger access or dropped hardware inside control cabinets. The narrow width is also useful where high terminal density is needed in compact enclosures.

There is no electrical connection to the rail, which helps prevent unintended earth loops through the mounting strip. The body allows a variable installation position, so it can be mounted horizontally or vertically without affecting normal operation. Because the design has no PE contact, protective earth must be routed separately when required by the overall machine layout.
