The EL7211-0010 is a single-axis servo drive terminal released by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. As a compact I/O slice that combines fieldbus communication, power electronics, and feedback processing, the unit directly controls a servomotor and its brake over the EtherCAT network. In distributed automation, it allows motion modules to be mounted near the mechanics, reducing cabinet space and wiring while maintaining the deterministic performance required for precise positioning tasks. This layout is useful on modular machines where the drive must sit close to the motor and exchange motion data over the same network as the rest of the I/O.

The terminal supplies a continuous phase current of 4.5 A rms and can deliver up to 9.0 A rms for short acceleration peaks, giving machines headroom for dynamic moves. Its inner current loop is updated at 32 kHz. The speed controller runs at 16 kHz, and a PWM carrier of 16 kHz drives the power stage to minimize torque ripple. One internal channel manages the entire axis, and the output stage is wired for one servomotor plus one brake, matching axes that need holding torque during idle. Two digital inputs accept limit switch or homing signals without extra terminals, which helps keep the axis hardware compact and reduces the need for separate interface slices. The EtherCAT backplane draws only 120 mA of E-bus current, so many nodes can coexist on the rail without overloading the supply.

The power contacts can conduct up to 10 A, enabling the motor supply line to be daisy-chained to adjacent slices. The electronics section operates from a stabilized control voltage of 24 V DC. The same rail feeds the integrated brake driver, which provides 0.5 A at a 24 V level to hold the shaft when motion is disabled. The housing measures 24 × 100 × 68 mm and carries an IP20 rating. The terminal is intended for installation inside a finger-safe control enclosure, where its narrow form helps preserve DIN-rail space for neighboring terminals.
